Psalm 29 – First Things

The first word used in chapter 29 is “ascribe”. “Ascribe” is the Hebrew word, yahab (yaw-hab') which means “to put, to give, or to set.” It’s something we do. The only reason I can think of why we would first and foremost need to remember to DO something is if our tendency is to either not do it, or easily forget it. Either way, it’s a good reminder of what we need to be doing with the greatness of God.
“Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.”

-Psalm 29:1-2

The remainder of the chapter is dedicated to the describing of the power and authority of God’s voice and calling out (vs.3-9). Verse 10 is dedicated to reminding us of his position in that authority as being “enthroned” as King forever. So amazing.

Even more amazing, is the closing verse (vs.11), and the fact that this God of power and authority is also the author of our strength and giver of our peace. Don’t miss this: It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to pursue strength or peace from any other source. Thank you God. What an honor to be loved by the King.
“The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.” – Psalm 29:11

  1. I believe the sequence of events in this Psalm is significant as well as the amount written about each of the ideas(exaltation and strength/peace). The first ten verses speak of enthroning God and putting Him in His proper position and grasping His sovereignty over all creation. Only after having mentioned that, does the insurmountable strength and peace fill God's people. If I was forced at gunpoint to make it into a math problem, I might say:
    Exalt God X 10=Peace/Strength X 1...

  2. I've been trying to listen a lot more...to listen to the Holy Spirit and obey. I can get caught up in a lot of fear worrying that I'm going to miss the voice. What a comfort it was to read Psalm 29:3-9! If His voice is powerful, majestic, capable of breaking cedars, striking with flashes of lightning, and shaking the desert, I can be confident that I will hear Him.

  4. I think it is very interesting that the Lord "gives" us things. Here we see peace and strength. We sometimes think we have to do things to earn gifts from God. In reality, they are just that, "gifts" from God. He gives us the things we need. We have to ask and seek them out. God knows we can not change on our own. That is why He gives us the things we need. - Michael
