Psalm 76 - God's Got Game

Guest Post: Tray Pruet

"You are resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains, rich with game." - Psalm 76:4
Well I actually added that last comma….sorry God, but he does have game….and it’s rich.

I was just amazed yesterday, and I was searching for words to describe God….but realized that any word used, falls short. Not that ‘resplendent with light’ came to mind….but I realized that all these descriptions, are merely words trying to capture the glory of the Creator. All the Psalms, 150 in all…..with all the words contained, still fall short. Yet we live as though we are serving a finite God. We give Him a Sunday or two every now and then to hold him at bay.

I read yesterday that in recent years, via the Hubble telescope that it is (conservatively) estimated that there are 350,000,000,000 galaxies….conservatively estimated! Why? Why did our Creator create things that no one in history knew about until recently. Maybe he is wanting us NOW to know….even with your fancy computers and telescopes....you cannot fathom the depth of me. You could spend your whole life trying to describe me…and still fall miserably short, not even scratch the surface.

God forgive me for not giving you my all, and forgive me for thinking you are smaller than you are.

  1. “Valiant men lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of his warriors can lift his hands.” (Pslam 76:5)

One of the cool elements of OT battles is that people realize before the battle starts that God has won the day. They understand that the battle has been won before the first arrow has been shot. They recognize that as the enemy sleeps the night before the conflict, they have already been defeated. God’s warriors can be confident in their actions because the battle has already been won. God has gone before them and prepared the field for victory.

OT battles are (often) metaphors for our lives. Whether it is marching around Jericho representing the defeat of a stronghold of sin our life, or taking 300 men to defeat an army of tens of thousands representing the power of some prayer warriors to change a church or a city. In all cases, God goes before us and prepares the way for His glory. In our big battles and small we can rest in the knowledge that the enemy lies plundered and is sleeping his last sleep. He cannot raise his hands against us.

  2. Love the added comma. What-what!

In our "God is my friend" mentality, sometimes we forget, like you said, how ENORMOUS our God is, and how we will never ever ever ever be able to fully get it. It's rather humbling and shows us, as stated in v.7, He alone is to be feared.

(I have to note, that in v.7, the word "angry" is a disservice to the Hebrew word, אף {aph], which means "nostrils". Picturing God all ablaze with His nostrils flared is way cooler than just "angry".)

  3. The words that come to mind for me are "thank You". I know they are not enough but, I am just overjoyed with all He has given me and can not come up with any others.
